Windows 2003 Server Command line tools

[ad#ad-4]
The day-to-day routine maintenance in a Windows Server 2003 based network, can be made much easier by knowing which command line tools are available for you. Here is a list of which commands I find particularly helpful. Base OS Tools: These useful command line tools come with the base Windows 2003 server install:

  • DSadd: Quickly objects to AD, can be used to create User accounts, OUs, Computer accounts, Groups and Contacts
  • DSmod: Modify existing AD objects
  • DSrm: Delete AD objects
  • DSmove: Move an object from its current location to a new location
  • DSQuery: Query AD according to specified criteria
  • DCgpofix: Restore default domain policy and default domain controllers policy.

Support Tools: Tools included in the Support Tools downloadable package (or on the Windows Server 2003 Media)

  • DNSLint: Help diagnose potential causes of incorrect delegation and other common DNS problems.
  • DCdiag: Diagnose replication problems between Windows domain controllers.
  • RepAdmin: Another tool for diagnosing replication issues. Includes a very useful /replsummary switch.

Downloadable Tools: Tools downloadable from Microsofts Download Center

  • DSrevoke: Proves the ability to revoke delegated administrative authority. In other words, restore changes made with the Delegation of Control Wizard.

Resource Kit Tools:

  • GPOTool: Check Group Policy object consistency/replication health

Third party tools:

  • ADFind: Enhanced version of DSQuery
  • ADMod: Enhanced version of DSmod
  • OldCmp: Find and cleanup old computer accounts
  • Unlock: Show currently locked accounts and unlock accounts
  • PsTools: Collection of great tools like PSList and PSExec
